Thanks for your patience. Have a look at the calendar. There you'll find the reports of every day of the tour. Live report - Friday, 1st August Official start of Global Friendship Tour from town hall Wuppertal After three eventful days in Wuppertal and a great farewell party at the Färberei (communication centre for disabled people and their friends housed in former dying factory) the Global Friendship cyclists were ready to go on tour to Berlin. In front of the town hall in Wuppertal Mayor Dr. Hans Kremendahl officially started for the GFT having asked the cyclists to take with them his best wishes to his former home city. lmmediately before the cyclists Set off hundreds of multicoloured balloons rose into the dear blue morning-sky above the market square taking with them the Global Friendship message. The farewell was accompanied by the applause of about 50 relatives, friends and town twinning activists who had come to wave good-bye to the more than 50 cyclists from seven different twin towns in Britain, Poland, Slovakia, Israel, Nicaragua, Russia, and Germany (East and West). Are you a flag expert? While the police were still escorting the Global Friendship Tour cyclists to the city limits someone looked at one of the flagpoles with the flags of the participating nations and wondered which colour had to be at the upper side of the Russian flag. One of the cyclists was able to give the correct answer (blue at the top, then white and then red) mentioning that he had looked that up in an encyclopaedia. Looking at the German flag with golden stripe at the top, one of the police officers critically said: "Well, why then did you not look up our flag?" Exceptionally warm welcome by German-British Club Holzwickede When after the first 25 km the cyclists arrived at Kemnade Reservoir (river Ruhr) for their first lunch break Mayor Gabriele Riedl (city of Bochum) welcomed the cyclists and wished them a great success for their tour east. As a great surprise, at the next stop at Zeche Zollern II in Dortmund (disused colliery that is now part of the industrial and cultural heritage of the Ruhr areas) the members of the town twinning association Holzwickede (Germany) and Weymouth (Britain) had prepared an enormous buffet with loads of sandwiches, lots of fresh food and a really very large number of cold drinks. The cyclists appreciated this very much and thanked the town twinning friends by singing the "Celtic Blessing" for them. Thank you! A guided tour around some of the large industrial site with the former colliery dating back to 1851 mode the visit complete. The cyclists were highly impressed by the architecture of this historical Landmark. Mayor of Waltrop comes by bike At the historic ship canal lift which is another characteristic sight of the so called and signposted "Route Industriekultur" Mayor Willi Scheffers who had come by bicycle to welcome the cyclists telling them of few details of the interesting industrial sight while his chauffeur came in the mayors official car with a trunk full of cold drinks. The cyclists happily enjoyed the stop and especially the refreshments. Older "news" you find in the archive or in the calendar |
